In a scathing statement, the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has vehemently condemned the recent increase in petrol price, warning that it will worsen poverty among workers and exacerbate the already dire economic situation in the country. The union's president, Comrade Festus Osifo, described the sudden hike as a "brutal assault" on Nigerians, particularly the working class, who bear the brunt of such decisions.
The TUC argued that the increase will lead to further hardship and potential social unrest, as Nigerians are already struggling to make ends meet. The union urged the Federal Government to immediately reverse the decision and implement policies that will strengthen the naira and alleviate the suffering of Nigerians.
According to the TUC, the sudden hike in fuel and electricity costs will only exacerbate the challenges faced by Nigerians, leading to further hardship and potential social unrest. The union faulted the timing and magnitude of the increases, wondering why ordinary citizens should bear the pains of government policies while those in power enjoy increased allocation and affluence.
The TUC also expressed deep concern over the further hike in electricity tariffs by 250%, saying electricity is essential for the survival of the poorest in society. The union described the increase as "insensitive" and "callous," and called on the government to take decisive steps to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians and promote policies that will strengthen the naira.
Comrade Osifo stated that the Congress had long proposed strategies to strengthen the naira and give value to every kobo spent by Nigerians, but the government has not made any concerted efforts to reduce the cost of governance or personal effects. He argued that the weak naira is one of the root causes of the economic problems facing the country.
The TUC president also criticized the government for not making any meaningful social security measures to cushion the effects of the increases on ordinary Nigerians. He wondered why the government has not focused on directing resources or effecting policies that would strengthen the naira and improve the standard of living of citizens.
The union vowed to continue defending the rights and interests of Nigerian workers and advocating for policies that promote social justice, fair wages, and a decent work environment. The TUC called on the government to act swiftly to restore confidence and prevent further deterioration in the living conditions of citizens.
