The Federal Government has disbursed N3 billion to states affected by the recent flood disasters across the country. The funds are intended to provide immediate relief to victims, particularly those displaced from their homes, in the form of food and temporary shelter.
The decision was announced at the National Economic Council Meeting held at the State House in Abuja on Wednesday. The meeting, chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima, was attended by governors, deputy governors, and ministers from across the country, as well as representatives from the Bill and Belinda Gates Foundation and Dangote Industries Limited.
Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, who briefed journalists after the meeting, revealed that some northern states were severely affected by the flood, resulting in loss of lives and properties. He emphasized that the funds would be utilized to provide urgent assistance to those in need.
The National Economic Council (NEC) also directed a collaborative effort, led by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, to address the flood disasters holistically. Additionally, NEC instructed an inventory to be conducted to assess the extent of damage caused by the flood.
Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State announced that the NEC Committee on Flood has been reconstituted, with Vice President Shettima as Chairman. The committee comprises governors from affected states, ministers, and representatives from government agencies.
