Political Leader Retracts Statement on National Grid Collapse Claims

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has retracted his earlier statements regarding an alleged national grid collapse following clarification from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

The incident began when parts of Lagos experienced power outages on Saturday, prompting Obi to post on social media platform X about what he described as "incessant fall of the grid." In his initial statement, he claimed the grid had collapsed 12 times in 2024 and criticized the allocation of $3.23 billion in borrowing over the past four years for electricity infrastructure improvements.

However, the TCN quickly clarified that no grid collapse had occurred. Instead, the power disruption was caused by the tripping of the Osogbo-Ihovbor and Benin-Omotosho lines, specifically affecting the Lagos region.

Following public backlash and accusations of making unverified claims, Obi issued a correction acknowledging the TCN's explanation. "I have since learned that there was no such collapse," Obi stated in his follow-up post. He explained that his initial comment was based on reports from what he considered reputable media sources.

In his revised statement, Obi emphasized the importance of enhancing Nigeria's power sector infrastructure to meet the needs of its over 200 million citizens. He expressed hope for continued improvements in power generation capacity across the nation.

The incident highlights the importance of verification in public discourse, particularly regarding critical infrastructure issues. The TCN's swift response in addressing the misinformation helped prevent further public confusion about the state of Nigeria's power distribution system.

This event has sparked renewed discussion about Nigeria's power sector challenges and the need for accurate reporting on infrastructure-related issues affecting the nation's power supply.
