A serious traffic accident on the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway left eight people injured when a commercial 'Molue' bus crashed into a road median at Ahmadiyya inward Abule-Egba on Friday. The incident, which involved a bus with registration number KTU 801 XM, occurred when the driver attempted to avoid colliding with pedestrians at a bus stop.
According to Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq, the accident was primarily caused by excessive speed and driver impatience. The driver, attempting to avoid both another LT commercial bus and waiting pedestrians, lost control of the vehicle, resulting in a collision with the expressway median and subsequent overturning of the bus.
Among the eight casualties were five males and three females, including the driver who suffered a fractured left arm. LASTMA officers quickly responded to the scene, coordinating rescue efforts with LASAMBUS medical personnel who transported the injured to the General Hospital at Ile-Epo for immediate treatment.
LASTMA's Response Unit was deployed to manage the removal of the overturned vehicle, while officers from the Meiran Police Division provided security support throughout the rescue operation. Some passengers managed to escape through the bus windows during the incident.
LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki expressed concern for the injured passengers and emphasized the critical importance of following traffic regulations, particularly regarding speed limits set by the Lagos State Government. He also urged both commercial and private vehicle operators to maintain their vehicles regularly, with special attention to brake systems to prevent similar accidents.
The incident highlights LASTMA's ongoing commitment to road safety and emergency response in Lagos through collaboration with various emergency response agencies. The authority continues to work towards preventing such accidents through proactive measures and strict enforcement of traffic regulations.
