In a significant but temporary shift in operations, the Port Harcourt Refining Company (PHRC) announced on Sunday that it has scaled down its activities to facilitate essential upgrades at its facility. This announcement, made during a guided tour by key executives, has stirred conversations around the refinery’s capacity and future prospects.

We are managing the process with the available resources, and we expect normal operations to resume soon.”

Despite the operational scale-down, Maidunama reassured stakeholders that product distribution remains uninterrupted. “We have several trucks loading refined products, and we are actively managing the distribution process,” he added. This assurance was echoed by Worlu Joel, the Terminal Manager at the Port Harcourt Depot, who confirmed that products including Premium Motor Spirit, kerosene, and diesel are still being distributed.

However, Joel expressed concern regarding the low turnout of tanker drivers, which has posed challenges in evacuating products efficiently. “We have surplus products available and operational loading arms, but we’ve had to beg tanker drivers to come and evacuate products,” he admitted. “We’ve already loaded more than ten trucks and expect to dispatch at least 15 before the day ends.”

The refinery has 11 functional loading bays, although currently, only three are in use. Each bay can load three trucks in just 15 minutes. “If you give us 100 trucks today, we can evacuate them in less than five hours,” Joel confidently stated, emphasizing the facility’s potential once the upgrades are fully realized.
