The PlayStation 5 Pro, the latest iteration of Sony's flagship gaming console, has finally hit the shelves, but its price tag has left many gamers reeling. The upgraded console, which boasts improved performance and graphics, comes with a staggering price tag of $699.99 in the United States, $250 more than the previous PlayStation 5 model.
In Europe, the console will set gamers back a whopping 799.99 euros ($860), while in Japan, it will cost almost 120,000 yen ($780). The price hike has raised eyebrows among gamers, with many expressing concerns about the affordability of the console.
"I don't think I'm going to buy it. I don't want to spend amounts like that to buy a console," said Hideki Hasegawa, a 45-year-old entrepreneur in Tokyo. Hasegawa recalled a time when consoles "didn't cost more than 30,000 yen."
Despite the hefty price tag, Sony is confident that the PlayStation 5 Pro will be a hit among gamers. The console boasts improved performance, faster load times, and better graphics, making it an attractive option for serious gamers.
However, analysts are skeptical about the console's pricing strategy. "The higher price looks challenging from a marketing perspective," said J.P. Morgan analyst Junya Ayada. Ayada noted that Sony's previous attempt to release an upgraded console, the PlayStation 4 Pro, failed to boost sales.
The trend of rising prices in the tech industry is not unique to Sony. Apple's latest iPhone 16 starts at $799, while Samsung's foldable screen phones, such as the Galaxy Z Fold 6, come with a premium price tag.
According to analysts, the rising prices reflect an increase in the cost of raw materials, such as rare earth minerals, as well as the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into devices. "These companies have to make a profit," said Jack Leathem, an analyst at Canalys. "And they're having to sort of balance off the sheer volume of money they're investing in AI and new technologies by increasing the price of the device as well."
Despite the rising prices, consumers seem to be undeterred. According to Canalys, nearly 310 million smartphones were sold in the first nine months of the year, a 5% increase from the same period last year.
For gamers, the PlayStation 5 Pro's improved performance and graphics may be worth the hefty price tag. However, for many others, the cost may be prohibitively expensive. As the tech industry continues to evolve, it remains to be seen whether consumers will continue to shell out top dollar for the latest gadgets.
