*Dangote Refinery to Begin Petrol Production in July, Says Official*
Lagos, Nigeria - Despite previous delays, the Dangote Refinery is now expected to commence petrol production in July, according to a top official.
The massive refinery, owned by billionaire Aliko Dangote, has been under construction for several years and was initially expected to be completed in 2020. However, the project has faced numerous setbacks, including logistical challenges and the COVID-19 pandemic.
But on Wednesday, the company's Executive Director, Devakumar Edwin, announced that the refinery is now on track to start producing petrol in July.
"The refinery is ready, and we are waiting for the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to supply the crude oil," Edwin said during a media tour of the facility.
The Dangote Refinery, located in the Lekki Free Trade Zone, has a capacity to produce 650,000 barrels of petrol per day, making it one of the largest refineries in Africa.
The start of petrol production at the refinery is expected to significantly reduce Nigeria's reliance on imported fuel and help stabilize the country's energy sector.
Edwin also revealed that the company has already begun recruiting staff and training them in preparation for the refinery's operations.
While the July deadline seems ambitious, industry experts are cautiously optimistic that the Dangote Refinery will finally come online after years of delays.
The refinery's completion is seen as a major milestone for Nigeria's energy sector and a testament to the country's potential for industrial growth.
