_Federal Government Begins Sale of Subsidized Rice to Nigerians with NIN_

The Federal Government has launched the sale of 30,000 metric tonnes of milled rice to Nigerians at a subsidized price of ₦40,000 per 50kg bag. The initiative aims to reduce the high cost of food in Nigerian markets.

Only public servants with a duly registered National Identification Number (NIN) will be eligible to purchase the rice. The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, stated that the move is part of efforts to curb racketeering and ensure transparency in the distribution process.

The subsidized rice is part of the federal government's intervention to alleviate the prevailing food crisis in Nigeria. The government has blamed the high cost of food on factors such as COVID-19, the Russia-Ukraine war, climate change, and localized challenges.

To purchase the subsidized rice, citizens must have a National Identification Number (NIN), a phone number, and be registered under the Integrated Payroll and Personal Information System (IPPIS) platform. A code number and Treasury receipt will be generated at the point of sale, which can be used to collect the rice at designated centers.

The government hopes that the injection of 30,000MT of milled rice into Nigeria's food balance sheet will crash the price of rice and other food substitutes. The initiative is part of the government's efforts to enhance food security and uphold the fundamental right to food for all Nigerians.
