Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, has been convicted on all three charges in his federal gun trial, marking a significant legal setback for the Biden family. Prosecutors accused Biden, 54, of lying about his drug use on a federal form during the purchase of a handgun in 2018.Despite pleading not guilty and claiming he was in recovery from drug addiction at the time of the purchase, a panel of 12 Delaware jurors deliberated for about three hours before reaching a unanimous verdict. Biden remained composed as the verdict was read, showing little emotion before embracing some of his legal team.Following the trial, Biden expressed disappointment in the outcome but gratitude for the support he received from his wife, family, friends, and community. Although several family members had been present throughout the trial, only his wife, Melissa Cohen Biden, and his uncle, James Biden, were in court on the day of the verdict. Jill Biden, the President’s wife, arrived in the courthouse lobby shortly after the verdict was announced. The charges against Biden include making a false statement for the acquisition of a firearm, making a false statement to be recorded in records, and illegal possession of a firearm. The judge has yet to schedule a date for sentencing, which typically occurs within 120 days of a conviction.Biden’s lawyer, Abbe Lowell, indicated that they would vigorously pursue all legal challenges available to Hunter. While Biden faces the possibility of prison time, experts suggest that receiving the maximum sentence of 25 years is highly unlikely. The charges stem from Biden’s purchase of a Colt Cobra Special revolver in 2018, which he discarded in a rubbish bin after approximately 11 days, prompting the investigation. Biden’s admission of his past addiction to crack cocaine was a focal point of the trial, particularly regarding his false statements on the firearm purchase form. The conviction comes amidst President Biden’s reelection campaign against Donald Trump, with the President expressing pride in his son’s efforts to overcome addiction while reaffirming his respect for the judicial process and indicating his acceptance of the outcome. The verdict was welcomed by some Republicans, including House Oversight Chairman James Comer, who characterized it as “a step toward accountability” on social media platform X.
